Postgraduate Diploma in Food Science
The Graduate Diploma is directed at persons who are interested in focusing their futher study on food industry problems in product or process developent, as well as practical applications of food science in processing and production systems.
Thie objectives of this course are to:
- Provide students with a sound foundation in food science, microbiology, quality and technology.
- Introduce students to industrial applications of food science and technology and the commercial outcomes.
- Broaden the understanding of the role of products as food and for use as food ingredients.
- Increase the understanding of the specialised disciplines of food science, emerging technologies and the relevance of this to the future food industry.
The course consists of eight subjects (100 credit points), and is equivalent to the first two semesters of the Master of Food Science. The first semester of the Postgraduate Diploma in Food Science constitutes the Postgraduate Certificate in Food Science, which consists of four subjects (50 credit points).
Credit for Previous Study
Applicants who hold the Graduate Diploma in Dairy Technology or an equivalent qualification will be granted 50 points credit towards the Postgraduate Diploma in Food Science.
Course Duration and Delivery - Semester 1 commencement only
One year full-time or two years part-time. Coursework is delivered through a mixture of classroom teaching (all core subjects), residential schools and distance education.
Course Structure
The Postgraduate Certificate in Food Science requires the completion of eight subjects comprising 100 credit points of coursework- three core subjects and five elective subjects.

Students are required to complete five elective subjects, with at least one coming from each stream.

If you have completed the coursework but not graduate with the Postgraduate Diploma in Food Science you will be credited with 100 points toward the Master of Food Science. If you have graduated with the Postgraduate Diploma in Food Science you will subsequently be granged 50 credit points towards the Master of Food Science.
